It’s happening now. Cast members are taking their places. The stage is set. Canada’s grasslands, lakes, marshes and forests are coming alive as millions of migrating birds herald the arrival of spring in one of the greatest shows on Earth. Celebrate this natural spectacle with DUC during Spring Migration Week April 10 – 16.

Regardless of who you are or where you live, migration is the most vivid symbol of the season.

Year after year, wildlife follow their ancient instincts on incredible journeys that showcase just how resilient, resourceful and flat out spectacular nature really is. Spring Migration Week is an opportunity to celebrate.

“Everyone has a favourite, telltale sign of spring,” says Greg Siekaniec, CEO for DUC. “For many people, it’s the first sighting of a robin bouncing across their front lawn. Others anxiously await the arrival of eastern bluebirds, another early migrant. A meadowlark perked on the top of fencepost sings a sweet song of spring to many people’s ears, while the familiar ‘flying V formation’ of Canada geese sends a clear signal that winter is on its way out.”

These birds are headed to wetlands and other natural areas across the country to breed, nest and raise their young. For 78 years, Ducks Unlimited Canada has been delivering conservation work that not only supports migration, but the many essential environmental benefits these habitats provide year round.

“From the distances they travel to the splashes of colour and life they add to the slowly awakening landscape, birds and other migratory creatures remind us how fortunate we are to enjoy this kind of biodiversity,” says Siekaniec. “It’s our responsibility to ensure that when wildlife arrive back on the breeding grounds, healthy habitat is in place to once again welcome them home.”

Celebrate Spring Migration Week during the week of April 10 by visiting MigrationWeek.org and by following DUC’s social media accounts. Migration themed quizzes will be posted daily on Facebook and Twitter, and followers will help DUC build a Migration photo album on Instagram.
