“(Bob) is one those unique individuals with a sincere passion for the environment and wetland conservation.” – Rick Robb, conservation specialist, DUC.

Bob Lozon, better known as “Grizz,” is from Wallaceburg. He’s worked around Ontario’s Lake St. Clair marshes all his life, including more than 50 years as a waterfowl guide. He knows the area like the back of his hand.

Good thing for Grizz. And for DUC.

Grizz was first introduced to DUC in the late 1970s. In 1980, he and a group of friends formed the Erie – St. Clair DUC volunteer chapter and hosted their first DUC fundraising dinner in the spring of 1981.  Grizz spent the next 25 years spreading the conservation message as part of that committee, with 15 as the dinner’s co-chairman.

In the early eighties, Grizz also became involved in DUC’s wetland construction program, assisting with surveys and labour work.  By the mid-nineties, he had gained valuable skills and knowledge and started undertaking minor construction supervision on restoration projects.

According to Robb, Grizz is a skilled contractor who continues to provide exceptional support to DUC programs.

“Grizz has spent years undertaking engineering inspections, construction supervision on rebuild initiatives and critical maintenance activities,” says Robb. “His skills and knowledge of wetland conservation restoration has benefited DUC, local conservation authorities and stewardship councils alike.  It’s been quite a ripple effect. One that’s continued to spread and benefit the entire region.”

For Grizz, it’s all about the experience. “Being involved with DUC for all of these years has been absolutely great and yet at times, very humbling,” he says.

For DUC, protecting and enhancing our investments in southern Ontario is a key component to ensure the landscapes remain healthy and productive long into the future. And with the help from dedicated individuals like Grizz, we’re making progress.
