Social media contest invites Canadians to share why wetlands matter for a chance to win an all-expenses-paid trip to Delta Marsh, Manitoba

This summer, be a part of a real-life rescue mission to save one of Canada’s most historic wetlands, Delta Marsh.

Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) invites you to tell your social media friends and followers why Canada should do more to rescue our wetlands, as part of the 2017 Rescue Our Wetlands Contest.

At stake: an all-expenses-paid trip this summer to North America’s second largest freshwater coastal wetland, where you’ll participate in DUC’s ongoing fieldwork.

The winner of the 2017 Rescue Our Wetlands Contest will spend three full-days learning about and experiencing wetland research. “This is not a tourist experience. The winner of this contest can expect to be immersed into our field crew,” says DUC research scientist Dale Wrubleski, PhD.

Be prepared to navigate 30 kilometers of wetland in a boat, work with native fish species, discover the diversity of wetland plants, and the value of water sampling.

Once thriving, Delta Marsh has experienced setbacks at the hands of agricultural runoff and invasive species like common carp that have impacted biodiversity at the marsh. DUC is restoring Delta Marsh, and our fieldwork is a vital part of this process.

Want to be a part of the Delta Marsh rescue team? Participating in the Rescue Our Wetlands Contest is easy. Simply express why Canada needs to do more to save our wetlands. It can take the form of a thoughtfully worded post or tweet, infographic, video, song, art piece, poem, craft, or any other expression you choose. Creativity is encouraged!

Then, share your piece with us on Facebook (facebook.com/ducksunlimitedcanada), Twitter (include @ducanada), or Instagram (@ducksunlimitedcanada). Include hashtag #Rescueourwetlands. You’ll receive one entry for your post, and one entry every time it’s shared or retweeted.

The contest opens April 10, 2017 at 7:00 a.m. Central Standard Time (CST) and ends May 7, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. CST.  The prize will be awarded via draw. The timing of the trip (to occur sometime between May and August 2017) and the winner’s interest will help determine the type of research they take part in.

Wrubleski’s advice for applicants: “This is field work…be prepared for anything.”
